This white casket held the bones of children who died in quarantine in the mid-19th century after coming to the U.S. On Saturday, mourners gathered to memorialize the remains of unknown immigrants that were found during construction of a courthouse in St. George. The interfaith ceremony was presided over by Edward Cardinal Egan, former Archbishop of New York. The remains will be placed in a holding tomb in the Moravian Cemetery until construction of a permanent memorial is complete.

They chanted “161! 24-7!” and held up signs “Help Keep Local Firehouse Open” and “Many Fires Happen at Night” in hopes the city will answer their call without delay.

Engine Company 161 on McClean Avenue will close from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. as of Jan. 17. The six firefighters at 161 will be redeployed to other units in the borough.
