Jerry Wade, or “Jerry the Peddler,” as he is known in the neighborhood, volunteered his time at C-Squat in the East Village in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The residents of C-Squat, a co-op in the neighborhood that was once illegal, set up a barbecue on the sidewalk and fed thousands of hungry people from food donated by New York City residents.
